Prayer for Sleep

Do you need better sleep?

Do you have trouble going to sleep or staying asleep?

Here is a prayer you can pray over yourself, or over a loved one who has difficulty sleeping:

Dear Lord,

You know I have struggled with sleep for quite a while.  Sometimes I cannot get to sleep, other times I wake during the night.  Please help me to lie down and sleep (Psalm 3:5).

Father, when the sun rises, help me to wake refreshed and ready for the day, knowing that You are with me (Psalm 139:18).

Lord, please break the cycle of sleeplessness.  You know I need rest to continue my job as a caregiver. You want me to be well rested to do the very valuable job You have called me to.

Please show me if I need to drink less caffeine, exercise more, eat differently, or take better supplements.  When I lie down at night, help me to shut out the world and give all my problems to You. Grant me peace as I give You my fears and rest in Your love (1 John 4:18).

Help me to let go of everything I did wrong today and receive Your forgiveness so I can sleep peacefully (Psalm 32:1-2).  I want to meditate on Your love as I fall asleep rather than meditating on my “to do” list for tomorrow.

Praise You that I no longer have to be afraid of the terror at night, or of the things I will face tomorrow (Psalm 91:5-6).  I know You can speak clearly to me in my dreams showing me how to order my day and my life.

For all this I give You thanks.  Amen.
